University of Helsinki burning behind Alexander II's statue

The Statue of Alexander II in the foreground. The university in flames in the background.
The university's main building was hit by several aerial bombs during the February bombings. The roof of the old side of the university collapsed, and most of its original interior and the university archives were destroyed. The old main hall was particularly hard hit. The main building was restored from 1944 to 1948.
