Finland’s first icebreaker
Share
Finland’s first icebreaker, s/s Murtaja, in South Harbour, in the northern quay branch (now called Lyypekinlaituri), in front of the market hall. The photo was possibly taken in April 1890, when the newly completed Murtaja arrived in Helsinki. In the bottom left corner of the picture is a sign on which the police prohibit going on thin ice with the threat of a 4-markka fine.
