Finnish-American migrants at the harbour

South Harbour is packed with people. There are also a few cars among them. In the background, the low buildings of the harbour and a steamship can be seen. On the right in the foreground is the freight car of a train.

Watching ships leaving or arriving was a common pastime, as the ships brought a glimpse of the big world to Finland. A group of Finnish-Americans arriving in Helsinki for a visit brought a large crowd to South Harbour in the spring of 1930.
