Explanation of sea marks used in the Dutch Lucas Waghenaer's map. Many of them have been in use well into the 20th century. A barrel anchored to the seafloor indicating the edge of a fairway was a common sea mark, the kind King Gustav Vasa also wanted to use for the fairway leading to Helsinki.
