Osman Pasha (1832–1900) was one of the most respected and acclaimed Ottoman generals. His army braved the siege of Pleven for five months and surrendered only in December 1877. Osman Pasha was sent to Russia where he was welcomed as a hero. After a few months of “star tour” he returned home to Istanbul. George Ramsay met him there and the discussion of the two gentlemen was very pleasant. (Suomen Kuvalehti, No. 126, 15 March 1878, page 5)
